The 1942 Mallorca Crafts Exhibition in Palma was by all accounts a great success; an uplifting event during troubled times. Vidres Can Gordiola was one of many of the exhibitors who remain operational to this day, a longevity that is testimony to the Balearic islanders’ deep-rooted respect for age-old agricultural and textile-related artisanal craftsmanship. The event was held towards the end of Paseo Mallorca, where Jaime I School is nowadays located in a building built in 1935 which, having served as military barracks during the Civil War, was later repurposed for community events. Interestingly enough, the architect of the venue for Artesanía Balear was the same gentleman who designed and built the building where the Nueva Balear Printing House is located: acclaimed Mallorquin architect Don Guillem Forteza Pinya. Craft fairs continue to this day in villages island wide, taking place year round and well attended.
