When the midday heat subsides, take a tuk tuk to Unesco-listed Galle Fort, stopping en route at the 2,300-year-old temple, Yatagala RajaMaha Viharaya, to peek at its nine-metre-long reclining Buddha. The 17th-century, 130-acre Galle Fort is a treasure trove of grand Dutch- and British-period villas, whitewashed churches, ochre-walled spice warehouses, and thick coral ramparts (splashed by the Indian Ocean).
Wander the quaint streets independently (it takes around an hour to circumnavigate), pausing to peep in Barefoot (for handlooms, sarongs and books), Stick No Bills (vintage travel posters) and PR (homewares and clothing by local designers).
