The annual September-October ‘shake-down’ harvest of this blossoming tree of Persian origin is a vital aspect of agricultural activity and rural heritage in Mallorca. Home to over two hundred almond tree varieties in orchards covering over fifty percent of all fruit trees harvested, the island contributes one third of annual almond exports from Spain which is second only to California in terms of production. In the last pre-World War II harvest prior to 1939 when Nueva Balear printed the original version of this map, the Municipalities’ individual almond tree counts came to a sum-total of 6.705,127 with the harvest thereof measured using metric quintals confirming that the districts of Palma, Llucmajor and Manacor respectively were the largest producers at the time.
